This is a well known La Mesa landmark. It’s located roughly 50-100 feet north of where the 94 freeway and Lemon Grove Avenue intersect. It’s painted on a bolder at the bottom of one of La Mesa’s myriad large hills. I’ve always heard it described as The Lips, but who knows. I’ve never found the artist’s identity or it’s background story. I bet it’s cool.
I’ve given folks directions so many times in that area — Go left at The Lips. They ask me what the heck I’m talking about, but I usually don’t describe it for them. When they arrive it’s with a smile and all the questions for which I have no answers.

I may not have the answers — but if you do, please let me know. Anyway, it’s still cool to be able to say, “Turn left at The Lips.”

Great lips! I can’t think of anything clean to say.

Too late – finders keepers.
The lips! I used to pass them practically every day on my way to a certain property.
Well, you remember that era long ago passed.
We used to call them the Lemon Grove Lips until we realized that they were just over the border of La Mesa.
I have seen them painted in many colors over the many years. Once they were purple…wish I had taken pictures.
Oh another bit of trivia about the lips. My husband says when driving past them: “Oh wise lips…speak to me. Tell me my future”
To which I burst into laughter.
He always said that someone should start a cult and meet in front of the lips to hear them speak.
Cher – I’ve never seen them purple. That must go WAY back.
>“Oh wise lips…speak to me. Tell me my future”
Too funny.
